About our Club:

The Villa-Lombard Cougars Wrestling Club is fortunate to be part of the Glenbard North Wrestling family. The Cougars formed 29 years ago - Jim Considine as Head Coach since 1983 - and have conducted practices in; a VFW hall on the Villa Park and Lombard border, Church basements, Glenbard East H.S. (1984 - 1987) and Glenbard West H.S. (1988 - 1989). The Cougars moved to Glenbard North H.S. in 1990. The Cougars and Glenbard North Wrestling program have grown and developed a strong bonding relationship. As a result, Glenbard North has supported our program since 1990 allowing us to conduct our practices in their superb wrestling rooms. Due to the strong history and name recognition the club has chosen to keep the name Villa-Lombard Cougars.

Our club is a member of the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation (IKWF) which consists of about 230 clubs throughout the state and about 11,000 members. The IKWF is a member of USA Wrestling. USA Wrestling is the national governing body for wrestling in the United States. USA Wrestling sponsors 3 forms of wrestling: Folkstyle, Freestyle, & Greco Roman. Folkstyle is the style wrestled at high school and collegiate levels. Our club also focuses on the Folkstyle wrestling.

Cost to Wrestle:

Enrollment into Villa-Lombard is $160

Tournament entrance fees usually cost $15.

Equipment:

Villa-Lombard supplies singlets and head gear for the wrestling season. Each wrestler will need to obtain wrestling shoes. Locally you can find shoes at Dick Ponds (St. Charles Road east of Kuhn), Sports Authority or Dick's Sporting Goods. We also have a shoe exchange program as returning wrestlers donate their shoes from the previous year to be passed on to younger teammates.

Season:

The season usually starts the second week of November and winds down in early March. State Tournaments, for wrestlers that qualify in the Regional & Sectional events, are generally held the second week of March.

Practice Schedule:

Practices are held at Glenbard North High School on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm.

Tournaments / Meets:

Each weekend starting in early December, our club enrolls in different tournaments throughout the area which are held generally on Sundays. Tournaments are usually local, however some could be a little further and may even require an overnight stay (fun for the kids and parents alike). Tournaments usually start with a weigh-in around 7:00 am and closes around 8:00 am. Between weigh-in and the start of the tournament the club hosting utilizes this time to bracket the wrestlers by age, weight and sometimes experience. Then the fun starts usually around 9:00 am. and usually ends between 1:00 & 3:00 pm depending on the size of the tournament and how well it is run. The Tot and Bantam wrestlers will always wrestle at least twice while the older wrestlers will wrestle three to five times depending on the bracket size and rule of the tournament for placing - round robin or double elimination.

IKWF has 4 divisions to equalize wrestlers by age:

Bantams - 8 and younger (Some tournaments may have 6 & under division)

Midget - 8 - 10

Novice - 10 - 12

Senior - 12 - 14

Age is determined by calendar year born (Through Dec. 31)
